Russia once again finds itself under pressure for its aggressive behavior towards Ukraine, this time by international organizations such as the UN.

By Petr Kopka, COSA Head of research programs

Heading into 2017, the events in Ukraine may be no closer to a final resolution, but recent events suggest that the international community is once again paying close attention. Most notably, both the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and the United Nations have recently taken actions that show their increased willingness to challenge the Russian version of events in Ukraine and to openly call the situation in Eastern Ukraine an “international armed conflict.”

It is important to view the following five events as part of an unprecedented international diplomatic surge to clearly mark Russia as the guilty party in the Ukraine events, while simultaneously highlighting how a dangerous pattern of Russian behavior has far-reaching consequences.

Although the European Union is the most advanced integration project in the world today, recent events have cast doubt on its further successful realization, at least in the shape it was initially conceived.

With Russia and Ukraine now having imposed mutual sanctions on each other’s airlines, the implications could affect the struggling economies of both countries and lead to similar types of tit-for-tat measures.

The fact that not a single decision made during the Normandy Four talks in Paris was committed to paper allows the parties involved to freely interpret the results and frame their own context.

The food blockade of Crimea means that Russia will have to double down to find ways to compensate for potential food shortages. Meanwhile, the peninsula could see a major hike in food prices.

The meeting in Berlin between only three participants of the Normandy Four to discuss the Ukraine crisis is proof that the Minsk agreements need to be reassessed. Could we eventually see the involvement of new stakeholders in the negotiation process?
